Several years ago, the only type of outdoor post lights were public streetlights. Now, however, homeowners are using outdoor post lighting for different areas of their homes.

Outdoor post lights, a type of pole lighting, are excellent for bright illumination because they provide a type of downlighting, meaning that the light comes from above and is cast downward. Just as streetlights cast light on the road, home outdoor pole lighting is used to cast light on driveways, home entrances, and landscaping.

The torchiere is a lighting fixture that has gained much popularity over the last ten or so years, with its slim elegant design and availability in a wide range of prices, it’s easy to see why. For those not familiar with the torchiere, they are a close relative of the floor lamp but with a few discernable differences. Torchieres are generally characterized by a very thin column that rises up from some sort of weighted base. Most stand around six-feet tall and have light diffusers or shades that force light upwards, as opposed to lamps which shine downwards. This is probably the key characteristic of the torchiere.

In the modern world there is hardly a house, a street, a business or a transport facility that does not make use of electric lighting. Although electricity is often seen as a panacea for all environmental ills, a lot depends on how the electricity is generated. Electricity generated by fossil fuels will still create carbon dioxide pollution. This is still a big advantage over petrol and diesel powered vehicles created noxious fumes in town and city centres, but the human race still needs to work towards generating electricity from renewable sources.

Novelty lighting is one of the best ways to add personality into any individual room or home without compromising on the actual purpose of the lamp, which is to illuminate your home. A sanctuary –a place where you can go to forget about problems,

solitude. A sanctuary can be closer than the nearest national
park and it can be in your own backyard garden.

It is very important that a sanctuary make you feel safe. Wide
open spaces can make people feel nervous and too visible to
others, so if you have a large garden, you need to enclose at
least part of it to make a smaller space. This can be done with
a structure you build, or just by having more plants or trees on
the outside of the garden to enclose it.

The dilemma is how to get the most attractive lighting in and around your home while keeping your electric bill down. Let’s start with some facts about home electric costs.
